Middle Eastern Politics

Today's photos show a little more contemporary side of the land. We visited Dhesheh Refugee Camp near Bethlehem. This camp was established after the 1948 war by Palestinians fleeing the violence. It is still there.

The UN administers the camp and provides most of the services. There are no tents here - the inhabitants have constructed houses, often of three stories, on the site of their original tents. You can imagine the alleyways and chaos. The refugees don't want to leave as this may weaken their argument that they should have the right of return to their former homes. There are refugees from over 400 villages all over Palestine. There are families who came from Ein Karem.
The entrance to the camp - UN Health Administration in the background. The 'chicken plucker' to the right

The "chicken plucker" so called because it left the refugees feeling naked as a plucked chook after enduring the searches and identity checks entering and leaving the camp

A famous Palestinian cartoonist, assassinated in 1987. The writing quotes him some weeks before his death: 'an artist who writes of the conflict must be prepared that he may be killed'

Near the entrance - the black bricks detail the home villages of the refugees

The posters on the door are welcoming home a youth released from detention by the Israelis

The Tent of all Nations is an educational and environmental farm begun by a Palestinian farming family who are resisting the pressure of the Israeli authorities to abandon their land. The farm is situated in the West Bank on occupied territory. It is surrounded by five settlements, considered illegal by the UN. The family are nonviolently resisting the pressure - which includes threats, cutting down of their fruit trees, cutting off water and power and blocking the access road. http://www.tentofnations.org/
The 'Tent of All Nations" entrance - the road has been blocked so the bus had to wait outside.
